Rosalind Allen's biography
2021-present: Friedrich Schiller University Jena
In October 2021 Rosalind became Professor of Theoretical Microbial Ecology at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, in Germany, as part of the DFG-funded Excellence Cluster "Balance of the Microverse".
2006-present: Edinburgh University
From 2006-2009 Rosalind was a Royal Society of Edinburgh Research Fellow in the School of Physics and Astronomy at Edinburgh University. In 2009 she became a Royal Society University Research Fellow. In 2013 she became a proleptic Reader and in 2017 she was promoted to a personal chair in Biological Physics. From 2021-2023 she was a part-time Professor at Edinburgh University and since 2023 she has been an honorary Professor.
2003-2006: FOM-AMOLF Institute, Amsterdam
Rosalind was a Marie Curie postdoctoral research fellow at the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF), in Amsterdam. She worked with Pieter Rein ten Wolde, simulating genetic switches. Together with Patrick Warren and Daan Frenkel, she developed a method for simulating rare events, known as Forward flux sampling (FFS).
2000-2003: Cambridge University
Rosalind did her PhD in the group of Jean-Pierre Hansen, in theoretical chemistry at Cambridge University. She used molecular dynamics simulations to study intermittent filling of hydrophobic nanopores by water. She also developed a method for simulating dielectric systems and collaborated with Patrick Warren on polyelectrolyte/surfactant mixtures.
1999-2000: University of Pennsylvania
Rosalind was a Thouron scholar in the Chemistry department at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, USA. She worked in the group of Mike Klein on MD simulations of non-ionic surfactants.
1995-1999: Cambridge University
Rosalind studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University (Emmanuel College), specialising in chemistry.
